At various points in meditation practice, a combining of two factors is employed. At this point, noticing and then using a little effort to sustain the quality that one has noticed/is experiencing is the current combining. Two things will result:
- sustaining is its own abiding. In this way, meditation deepens.
- the ego is decreased through the sustaining.
What is interesting about this process is that the ego/personality is what is noticing, its effort is used to sustain, and yet ego will also start to be eroded by the same process.
