Core to the Eastern metaphysical traditions is the nature of mind. What is mind? What is included in the human response mechanisms that all filter through the cognitive processes? Is mind only cognition? What about sensations, perception, empathy, respect, anger, envy, greed, or sense of beauty and joy? Is fun an aspect of mind? What about love or compassion?
The ancients of the East wondered about the body. Is it made from the mind? Meditators today probe this as well. If the body, then what about all phenomena? What is the relationship of subject (I) and object (you or that)?
We begin with this quotation from Buddha Shakyamuni:
“the characteristic of past mind is that it has ceased, the characteristic of future mind is that it has not yet occurred, and the characteristic of present mind is that it does not remain. ”
