advancing meditation: contemplation – the seed of vipashyana

We begin training in the other leg of meditation: vipashyana. As is said in the Introduction to today’s “meditation,” vipassana is Pali and vipashyana is Sanskrit. They both refer to the same term and mean penetrating insight.

The first significance to understand  is “yana” (or “anna” in Pali) contained within the word. Yana means vehicle – or a mechanism – that takes one from here to there. In meditation training, vipashyana is used to take one from delusion and illusion to truth and reality.

As shamatha is the ground of meditation, vipashyana is the spacious sky.
